Buttock surgery is commonly performed in one of two ways with a buttock lift, or buttock augmentation using implants or fat transfer. The fat transfer procedure is sometimes referred to as a "Brazilian butt lift." A buttock lift improves and/or removes excess, sagging buttock and thigh skin that has developed as a result of weight loss, aging and gravity, or genetics. The result is a more flattering, toned butt and a sleeker thigh contour. Patients are often surprised by how much buttock lifts can significantly improve their thigh appearance as well, simply from the manual lifting of sagging skin around the buttock and hip areas. Buttock augmentation uses implants, fat grafting or sometimes a combination of both to increase the size and fullness of your buttocks.
Reasons for Considering Buttock Surgery:
- Reshape mid-body contour
- Correct sagging skin and fat due to aging or excessive weight loss
- Remedy weight gain and stretched skin caused by multiple pregnancies
- Increase fullness, roundness and projection of your buttock
- Enhance your self-image and self-confidence
The precise procedure varies with each patient, depending on the body type and desired surgical outcome. Generally speaking, the buttock lift involves adjustments to the buttocks and thighs that require an incision at the crease of the buttocks. Excess skin is then removed, followed by the underlying fat deposits. Finally, the skin is pulled taught and sutured into the new configuration. Buttock augmentation with implants is performed by inserting a silicone implant specially made for the buttocks either in the muscle or above the gluteal muscle on each side. Buttock fat grafting, a.k.a Brazilian butt lift, is achieved by performing liposuction on an area of the body where excess fat is stored. The fat, tissue and blood that were removed through liposuction are then processed and a purified version of the fat is then added to the buttocks through small injections all over your buttocks. It usually takes about 2-4 hours to perform buttock surgery. Time requirements can, of course, vary between each unique situation. The surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
Generally, post-operative instructions require plenty of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time. Bandages are applied right after surgery to minimize swelling and provide support. Tubes are often placed to drain excess fluids. The scars resulting from the incisions are permanent but are carefully placed so as to minimize visibility. Patients sometimes report minor pain associated with surgery which can be treated with oral medication. Recovery time varies with the extent of the procedure. While complications are rare, patients can minimize potential problems by carefully following the directions that are given after the surgery.
