Eyelid surgery candidates should be in good health and have reasonable expectations for what their surgery will achieve.

Reasons for considering eyelid surgery include:

• Having your field of vision limited by drooping eyelids
• Wanting to get rid of dark circles and bags under the eyes
• Having a tired appearance
• Desiring a different eyelid shape than the one you were born with

Eyelid surgery can be either cosmetic or functional. It may be performed on only the upper or lower lids, or both, depending on the client’s needs. The two main types of eyelid surgery procedures are upper blepharoplasty and lower blepharoplasty.

Upper blepharoplasty, or an eyelid lift, removes excess fat and skin and tightens surrounding muscles through an incision on the natural crease of the upper eyelid. This can address drooping skin that may cause you to appear tired or obstruct your line of vision.

Lower blepharoplasty also removes excess fat and skin and tightens surrounding muscles, but does so through an incision along the lower lid. Lower eyelid surgery can address puffiness and under-eye bags as well as reduce dark circles.

Dr. Davis performs eyelid surgery at The Atrium, a specialty operating facility at Centennial Hospital. Depending on the invasiveness of surgery and whether you are combining procedures, a local or general anesthesia may be used during the procedure.

While the majority of clients are able to return home the same day as their surgery, there must be someone to drive you home as you will not be able to do so yourself. You also may need help the first few days after the procedure since blurry vision for a few hours to several days is a common after-effect.

If fine lines and wrinkles around the eye and face are also a concern, we may recommend combining BOTOX® injections or laser skin resurfacing to help smooth and firm up the surrounding areas.

After eyelid surgery, you will need to take at least a week off from work, possibly more, depending on the nature of your job. It is a good idea to take it easy during that time so you can heal. You will likely experience some bruising and swelling, but these should fade within a few weeks. Keep in mind that how you heal will not be exactly the same as others, so listen to your body and be sure to follow Dr. Davis’ post-operative instructions.

While the majority of bruising and swelling should be gone within a few weeks, it can take several months before you are fully healed and seeing your final results. Although individual results vary, many of our patients report looking more youthful and rested.
